Automated Online Marking

Our automated free or open-text marking website is an innovative tool for teachers and students aimed at enhancing the learning process.

Students type their answers online in response to questions and mark schemes set up by teachers. Answers are automatically graded, diagnostic feedback given and certificates generated for saving or printing. Marks are awarded for phrases or words that match the key ideas of the mark scheme. An editable synonym database allows for alternative student wording of key ideas, and marking in context is achieved through an algorithm based on key word spacing and position.

There are a wide range of test management options available including adding images and notes to support questions and the requirement to make reference to the question key words in an answer. Spelling, grammar and punctuation can also be marked and graded.

The site has unlimited free access for students and all teachers have free standard accounts. Advanced membership for teachers is free until January 2016.

Time spent entering a question and mark scheme online for your students to use in an automated marking test has potential long term benefits for both yourself and your students. Tests can be quickly developed and calibrated online to encourage students to use phrases and vocabulary that match the key ideas of the mark scheme. Student answers will be automatically marked and graded.

Automated marking does not mean the end of your manual marking as the grade awarded should be cross-checked with your own assessment. Answers cannot be graded on structure or style and some students may try to game the system with well-crafted nonsense. However, a good test should reduce your marking workload and will see students benefit from instant diagnostic feedback and a grade that relates closely to their understanding of the topic.

Standard teacher accounts are free for up to three tests. Advanced accounts are free until 1 January 2016 and allow for an unlimited number of tests with many enhanced features.

Have you ever wanted quick feedback on your written work, but have had to wait for your teacher to get round to marking it?

On this site, you simply type your response to a question in the text box provided and regularly check your answer. Feedback is immediate with your answer marked and graded automatically.

A test certificate is generated for downloading or printing and diagnostic comments suggest how you can improve your work. A copy is saved online for you and your teacher.
